ABOUT THE LAKE

CHAUTAUQUA LAKE IS APPROXIMATELY 

17.5 MILES LONG BY 1 MILE WIDE.  IT COVERS MORE THAN 13,000 ACRES,

HAS OVER 42 MILES OF SHORELINE AND AT 1,300 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL

IT IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST NAVIGABLE  BODIES OF WATER IN NORTH AMERICA.

CHAUTAUQUA LAKE WAS FORMED BY RETREATING GLACIERS BETWEEN 12,000 AND 16,000 YEARS AGO. AS THE GLACIERS MOVED THEY DUG OUT TWO BASINS. DURING THEIR RETREAT THEY DEPOSITED MATERIAL CALLED MORAINES, WHICH REMAINED AT THE OUTLET, LONG POINT AND MAYVILLE.  OVER TIME. THE MORAINE BARRIER BETWEEN THE TWO BASINS ERODED, FORMING ONE 13,422 ACRE LAKE.

CHAUTAUQUA LAKE WAS RECENTLY FEATURED BY NEW YORK

DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION AS ONE OF

"NEW YORK'S FISHIEST 50".
